Ending 2021 thinking about 2022 OLW

As I reflect on my last teaching day of 2021, I notice it included both high spots and low spots.

High spot – so enjoyed celebrating the culmination of a Word Collecting Unit with a grade 6 Vocab Fashion Show.

High spot – I shared with each of my class how my gift to friends and families this year was a copy of Peter Reynold’s illustrated book of Cat Steven’s song Peace Train. Then I played this video and wished them all a peaceful winter break and a peace-filled 2022. ( I wish you the same!) https://youtu.be/0QpjR6-Uuks

Low point – my last period of the day. One needy and disrespectful student pushed my buttons and as the class finally ended, I was perseverating on only the lousiness of this last period, forgetting all that happened earlier and feeling as if I was thrown off that Peace Train.

As I reflect on my 2022 OLW, I want it to be a reminder to hold on to the high points and not let the low points be all I think about. As humans, I feel we can spend more time venting and talking about the negative. And this doesn’t feel healthy. And maybe that becomes my word – healthy. If so, I want to be reminded all year to be healthy in my reflections, focusing on both the ups and downs and maybe try to be more about the ups! I also want to spend time in 2022 focused on my financial health. I turned 58 this year and it might just be Covid teaching but some days I think it might be time to do something else. But first I need to figure out my finances and my options. Finally, I do really like the Peace Train video…maybe peace could be my word?!

I still have a few more days to decide on my word but right now healthy and peace are the top contenders. How about you?

Health and peace both sound good! It is always those not so great moments that fill my head late at night- I hope you can let it go. The word collecting unit sounds like so much fun!
Wishing you safe travels this holiday season and I can’t wait to see what word you pick (I think I know mine, which is shocking, as I usually do not know until the 31st).

Both words seem to currently fit you and your plans! I’m not even close to a decision as I have no real list of possibilities yet. I’ll have some drive time to consider 2021 and 2022! Happy Holidays!

Sally, it has been a year of highs and lows, of patience being tried, of exhaustion. This video, however, is exactly what is needed in a quiet moment of reflection. Uplifting in so many ways, so full of hope and beauty and, yes, peace! I think that is the word that gets my vote. People reaching out to each other, combining efforts around the world…my word for 2021 was “awe”. I’d read that a sense of awe makes a person more altruistic. Never thought of it that way before and it is TRUE. It will be my word every year, maybe my life’s word…but I will see what 2022 decides to bring! Thank you for this needed oasis today. Merry Christmas to you!
