Inspired by PS58

My school’s teaching using the Units of Study for Teaching Reading and Writing for the first time this year. My friend works at PS58 in Brooklyn and they have been using the UoS for years. Today I observed a 2nd and 3rd grade class and chatted with a 5th grade teacher. Now I’m inspired to return to VA. It helps to see that I am going so many things well. It helps to see ways I can grow.

When I saw this sign on my walk back to my hotel, I smiled. I am feeling ready to keep practicing reading and writing workshop, not just talk about it!

Visiting other schools and other classrooms can be the nudge we need to grow. Your visit was clearly inspirational. Isn’t it strange how some quotes show up just when we need them?

What a great thing to be able to do – visiting other schools and classrooms to be inspired! Now you are even more ready to take the challenge and make UoS work for you and your students! I loved all the photos you shared. Best wishes for continued success!

Love that you saw the quote after your visit to your friend’s school. It is inspiring to visit other schools and see teachers and students learning together. It’s great that your own practice was validated too, and that you discovered opportunities for growth!

It is always inspirational to visit someone else’s classroom. We have been piloting the Units of Study this year and had the chance to do some of this visiting and I always left inspired to try new ideas! Thanks for this post!

It is so important to gain other perspective and visiting other classroom settings is a powerful form of professional development. We get to step back a little and view clearly every aspect of the classroom. You have invested in your students with this visit. May the energy it has engendered be further enhanced upon your return to your own school.

I always learned most when I could observe a teacher and then talk about the subject. ANd then taking lots of pix. I am a visual learner for sure. Glad it’s going well.

Your line about finding you do so many things well and know what you need to grow- that’s learning, for all of us, right? That place of knowledge and that stretch. We can’t just criticize ourselves and start from scratch, we acknowledge what we understand and already do. I love the title- I like the matter-of-fact way of naming schools in NYC. And great photo collage. I wondered what you would post on this very busy day- nice slice!

One of my most favorite things to do is visit other classrooms! I try to pop into my grade level colleagues next door when I can. I’ve been using WUoS for forever and love it. I’m so envious of schools that are using RUoS. Looks wonderful!
